Spousal Support in New Mexico

Spousal support, also called alimony, is made up of payments from one ex-spouse to the other during or after their divorce. Unlike child support, which is determined through a highly structured set of calculations, spousal support is what is known as a discretionary award.

Spousal Support and Alimony

Spousal support is a legal obligation on a person to provide financial support to his or her spouse before or after marital separation or divorce. Spousal support is not child support. These are often confused as combined but child support is specifically designed to provide for the children during and after a divorce; spousal support is specifically designed to provide for a spouse.
